Barnardo’s Coleraine: Baby & Kids' Essentials Without the Huge Price Tag
Jun 02, 2025
If you're a new mum or shopping for one, here's the best-kept secret in Coleraine - Barnardo’s at Unit 4, Old Court Market (just off the Castlerock Road).
From prams and travel cots to baby clothes, walkers, toys, and more, the shop is packed with essentials for little ones, all at prices that won’t break the bank. And the best part? Most items are in excellent condition — many still have their original tags.
This isn’t your average charity shop. Managed by the endlessly hard-working Lorraine Taggart, Barnardo’s Old Court Market is one of the only children’s-focused charity shops in Northern Ireland.
The selection is wide, the quality is high, and the atmosphere? Pure community.
“If you’re expecting, it’s the perfect place to come and get stuff for your newborn baby,” says Lorraine.
“The prams that come in are very good. Honestly, 90% of what we receive in donations is fantastic. It’s cheap, it’s affordable, and it’s good for the environment.”
Clothes range from newborn up to age 12, sometimes older, depending on donations, and yes, many pieces still have their original retail labels.
“The clothes are fantastic,” Lorraine says with a smile. “People can’t believe the quality.”
But the real heart of this shop goes beyond the bargains. Lorraine runs the store alongside part-time staff member Samantha and a dedicated crew of volunteers.
“Without them, this place wouldn’t work,” she says. “They give their time, their energy, and they really care.”
Volunteer Lesley credits the shop with helping her manage anxiety and build confidence.
“It helps to be out and doing stuff,” she says. “I’ve come a long way since I started here. Lorraine’s been amazing.”
Shoppers are often grandparents getting ready for visiting grandkids, families trying to make ends meet, or anyone trying to be a bit more eco-conscious.
“Toys aren’t cheap,” Lorraine points out. “And kids are always onto the next thing before you know it. Here, you’re saving money and keeping things out of the landfill.”
And it’s not just about second-hand goods, it’s about doing good.
“The money we raise helps people in the community, and that’s what it’s all about,” says Lorraine.
While the shop’s shelves are stacked with great finds, the real value lies in the welcoming atmosphere and the people behind the counter. “Here, we talk and we connect,” Lorraine adds. “That’s what this place is - friendly faces, good conversations, and making a difference, one pre-loved item at a time.”
So, whether you’re after a £15 walker that would cost £50 elsewhere, a pile of jigsaws to keep the kids busy, or a chat that brightens your day, Barnardo’s Old Court isn’t just a shop. It’s a lifeline and part of the community.
