North Coast Talent Taps Into the Spotlight in Hilarious Dancing Comedy "Stepping Out"
Jun 05, 2025
There’s a buzz building along the Causeway Coast, and it’s all down to three local theatre talents who are making waves with their next big stage outing. Cary Jossart (Coleraine), Una Culkin (Portrush), and director Alan McClarty (Coleraine) are bringing their North Coast flair to Derry/Londonderry in Stepping Out – the toe-tapping comedy that promises to deliver big laughs and even bigger heart.
This hilarious and heartwarming production, presented by Derry/Londonderry Musical Society, is set to dazzle audiences at the New Gate Arts and Culture Centre from 25 to 27 June. The play follows a mismatched group of wannabe dancers who attend a weekly tap class in a rather rundown church hall, led by a spirited former pro, Mavis. It’s all fun and fumbles until the group are challenged to step up and perform in front of a live audience – cue nerves, laughter and the kind of feel-good theatre that lingers long after the curtain call.
North Coast theatregoers will recognise Una Culkin as the wonderfully uptight Vera, and Cary Jossart brings her trademark charisma to the role of party-loving Rose. But the local pride doesn’t stop there. Directing the production is Alan McClarty, a seasoned figure in the Coleraine arts scene, who brings sharp comic timing and emotional nuance to the show’s playful pacing.
They’re joined by a talented ensemble cast including Natalie Armstrong, Michelle Lake, Amy Astbury, Christine Deane, Emer McCaffrey, Eden Riley, Dawn Stevenson and Simon Quigg, with choreography by Venessa Chapman and live piano accompaniment from the delightfully grumpy Mrs Fraser.
With quick wit, mismatched shoes and more than a few missteps, Stepping Out offers a glimpse into the friendships, frustrations and fabulous footwork that come from learning to dance – and learning to trust yourself.
This is community theatre at its most charming, with a North Coast stamp of quality. Whether you’re in it for the comedy or the chance to see familiar faces shine on a new stage, one thing’s for sure: this is one performance you won’t want to miss.
Performances run 25–27 June at the New Gate Arts and Culture Centre. Book now at www.newgatearts.com.
