Peaceful Protest This Tuesday as Community Rallies to Keep Riverside Theatre Open
Jun 02, 2025
Coleraine’s arts community is preparing to raise its collective voice, not in anger, but in unity, with a peaceful protest set for Tuesday 4th June at 6:30pm outside the Council Offices on Portstewart Road.
The aim? A clear and urgent one: to keep the Riverside Theatre open.
Following growing concern over the future of this much-loved cultural venue, Steven Millar, a local actor, who has been campaigning against the theatre's closure, is calling on theatre lovers, community groups, dancers, singers, families and anyone who values the creative spirit of Coleraine to come together and stand in support of Riverside.
This isn’t just another demonstration. It’s a celebration of what the theatre brings to the community - a space for storytelling, connection, and expression and a respectful demand for action.
Attendees are encouraged to sing, dance, perform, or simply speak from the heart about what the Riverside means to them.
“A speaker and mic will be available, and you can connect your phone if needed,” says Steven. “We can help organise lyrics and backing tracks too - this is about making an impact through creativity.”
With media and journalists expected to cover the protest, the message needs to be clear: the community is united, passionate, and not ready to let Riverside fade into memory.
"Signs, banners and bold voices are all welcome. This is a peaceful, positive, and solution-focused protest, not one of blame, but one that urges council leaders to act fast and smart," added Steven.
Protestors are asking for a viable, sustainable model that works for both the council and Ulster University, and most importantly, one that preserves Riverside as a working theatre.
Steven continued, “If your theatre group, dance group or community team would like to perform, get in touch. This protest is about togetherness — we want it to reflect the talent and heart that Riverside nurtures.”
As funding challenges threaten creative spaces across the UK, Coleraine’s response sends a strong message: culture is not optional — it’s essential.
The Riverside Theatre isn’t just a building — it’s a beating heart in the life of the community. And on Tuesday evening, that heart will be heard loud and clear.
